Frida Escobedo makes history at The Met

The Mexican architect becomes the first woman to lead the design of an entire section of the museum in its 156-year history.

The Met has officially begun construction on the new Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing, designed by Frida Escobedo Studio. Spanning 126,000 square feet across five levels, the space will be dedicated to the museum’s collection of 20th- and 21st-century modern and contemporary art.

Escobedo’s design aims to reshape the relationship between the galleries and the city, combining varied ceiling heights, expansive windows and a public rooftop terrace. The new wing will also expand the museum’s gallery space while strengthening its connection to Central Park and the surrounding neighborhoods.

With $670 million in funding secured, the project is expected to open to the public in 2030, marking a new chapter for The Met and for Mexican architecture on the international stage.
