Bee2Be brings conservation into Mexican design

Fundación Bee2Be has added jewelry to its Abeja: Joya de la naturaleza initiative, a project that uses Mexican design to support the conservation of the melipona bee. For its 2026 edition, students and emerging designers can develop proposals inspired by the species, which is deeply connected to Maya culture, with ideas that can later become jewelry pieces, collections, packaging, or collaborations with brands.

The initiative expanded this year from 10 to 25 Mexican universities and received more than 1,000 proposals. Across fashion, art, industrial design, and now jewelry, the melipona is beginning to appear from new perspectives: as inspiration, object, and creative language. A far more contemporary way of bringing an ancestral species into the imagination of Mexican design.

CFDA and Bezos Earth Fund bet on sustainable fashion

The CFDA and the Bezos Earth Fund, led by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, have opened applications for the Next Thread Initiative Designer Award 2026, which will award $100,000 to $300,000 per brand to independent labels advancing sustainable design, materials, and production.

The award is part of a $6.25 million, three-year partnership that will also support emerging designers and fashion students.

Eligible brands must be based in the U.S., founder-led, have fewer than 30 employees, and generate at least $100,000 in annual revenue. Applications close August 31.

For the next generation of fashion, sustainability is no longer just a statement: it’s an investment.
